Ask anyone who lives or works in Redding, California what their favorite thing is about living in Northern California is and you will hear recreation, recreation, recreation. Located at the top of the state, Redding is known for its ample outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking, biking, kayaking, boating, paddleboarding, skiing, snowboarding, sailing, caving and so much more. The second sunniest city in the U.S. with more than 300 sunny days per year, you will never be bored exploring and adventuring. 

 

National Parks:

Just minutes from Redding, Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is an outdoor lover’s paradise, boasting waterfalls, beaches, and trails, and offering boating and paddling year-round. Just east of Redding is the unique Lassen Volcanic National Park, with mountain scenery reminiscent of Yosemite and thermal wonders similar to Yellowstone.

Redding is the proud home of 225 miles of trails within a 15-mile radius of the town. Known as the trails capital of California, there are trails available for hiking, biking, mountain biking, off-road vehicles, and horseback riding.

Redding is the best base camp for winter recreation, offering snow fun in every direction but south. Enjoy skiing, snowboarding, sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and more. Residents can enjoy the beautiful volcanos of Mt. Shasta or Mt. Lassen during every season or visit the Trinity Alps for amazing hiking and scenery.

Redding has a large population of families and therefore has a large offering of different sports leagues for young athletes. In addition to competitive high school sports programs, there are local leagues offered through the city, through travel sports clubs, and through private little leagues. You can find everything from baseball and basketball to rugby and lacrosse. There is something for every athlete at every level. In spite of Redding having a smaller population, many of the local high school and little league teams have been successful in statewide competitions and playoffs, bringing home state titles and awards. 

 

Fishing:

Redding is the heart of Northern California’s fishing and home to famous trout waters like the Lower Sacramento River and Upper Sacramento River. Redding is also surrounded by outstanding fishing waters like McCloud River, Pit River, Hat Creek, Fall River, Manzanita Lake, Trinity River and more. World-class fisherman travel from all over the world to fish the waters of Northern California. There are opportunities to see the famous journey of the salmon as they make their way up the river to spawn and to fish the waters that make this area famous.

Within an hour drive or less, you can visit Castle Crags State Park and hike to the top to see the amazing views, experience the nature caves of Shasta Caverns National Natural Landmark, find the natural waterslides, hidden waterfalls or drive just three hours to spend a weekend on the Pacific coast in the world-famous Redwoods.
