We’ve all heard the horror stories. Some of us may have first hand experience with them. Interviews bring up self-doubt, anxiety, pressure and also some funny moments. It''s important to learn what not to do in an interview so you can avoid interview mistakes. We’ve scoured the Internet for some hilarious stories for your enjoyment. Hopefully it will help you realize what not to do in your next interview! Enjoy!
Here are some of the worst interview examples we found!
1. The overly honest applicant
While these are hilarious, we don’t recommend you follow in these candidate’s footsteps. But feel free to have a laugh!
Interviewer: What’s one of your weaknesses?
Applicant: Well. Sometimes after lunch, I can get a little gassy.
During an interview we asked the candidate for an example of when they had to do something, which was out of their comfort zone. She replied with “On a night out last year I drank way too many shots and had to have my stomach pumped. That was really uncomfortable.”
Interviewer: “How is your relation to alcohol? Do you drink?”
Applicant: “Good! Yeah I drink, but not cause I think it tastes good, only to get drunk.”
2. The UnderPrepared candidate
There's a lot that goes into preparing for an interview. Practicing interview questions and answers, printing out an extra resume to take with you, and being confident are just a few ways to prepare. One of the most important things to do to prepare for an interview is to dress well and take a shower. Some people forget this....
"Interviewed a guy who showed up in a rock t-shirt and had goggles on his head. He smelled so bad we had to cut the interview short."
3. Overly confident
When an interview goes well and you know you nailed it, it’s easy to forget you’re still being interviewed.
@DaleyAFC: The interview went so well I got cocky, and when the interviewer gave me my suit jacket from the rack I turned so he could put it on me. No job.
@HouseofLard: At the end of an interview for a promotion I was asked if I had any questions. I said, "When do I start?" Failed.
“A candidate complained that she was hot. She then said ‘Excuse me’ and removed her socks. After placing them on the desk, she continued as if everything was normal.” Source: Washingtonian.com
4. The Nervous Applicant:
It’s normal to be anxious and nervous for an interview. Some people just can’t handle the stress of an interview. You’ll love this story!
“I interviewed a guy for a PR job, and he was so nervous that he threw a glass of water over me trying to shake my hand. He started asking me personal questions and kept trying to dry me with his tie. Halfway through I said, 'Look, let's just start again.' So he gets up, shakes my hand, walks out, and then comes back in smiling. I never meant leave the room! Second time around, it was worse if anything." Matthew Riley
We know interviews can be scary but just use common sense. Come clean, ready to answer any questions thrown at you and above all be respectful. Answer honestly but within reason. And whatever you do, do not take a phone call during your interview. You can check out more hilarious stories:
